Face-to-face is fading. Not disappearing overnight. Fading by preference.
It started with groceries. Then flowers. Small things, low stakes, easy to move online. We barely noticed. Then we stopped feeling bad about it.
Now the line has moved further than most vendors expected. Roofing. Car buying. High-ticket, high-touch decisions. Totally completable online. The old logic, that big purchases require a showroom, a handshake, a meeting, no longer holds.
This shift reshapes competitive rankings. A local incumbent built on geography and reputation now faces a digital-first challenger who never needed a zip code. Locality is no longer a moat.
Online presence beats local markers. The vendors who move fast, who build clean digital experiences, leapfrog the ones still coasting on proximity, because customers can no longer tell the difference.
What About Fully Rep-Free B2B Sales?
B2B is next. It always felt immune. Big spend. Multiple stakeholders. Top management sign-off. Meetings, site visits, rituals of due diligence. The logic was: the bigger the decision, the more bodies in the room.
That logic is breaking.
Gartner surveyed 632 B2B buyers and found that 61% prefer a rep-free buying experience, with most choosing to conduct independent research through digital channels. A more recent Gartner survey of 646 buyers found that number has climbed to 67%. The direction is clear. The ritual is unwinding.
Salespeople Are No Longer Deal Makers
And 73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach. Bad prospecting actively damages relationships with potential customers. The old playbook, more calls, more meetings, more touchpoints, is now a liability.
Thirty years of internet. This is the inflection. Online habits compounded. Virtual meetings replaced in-person ones. Text replaced calls. Async replaced sync. Each step felt small. Together, they rewired the default.
The meeting is no longer the product. The information exchange is. And information flows without a calendar invite to Zoom or Google Meet.
Every service business in every B2B vertical now faces the same question: what is your digital experience worth to a buyer who never wants to meet you?
The ranking reset is live. The window is open. Watch this closely.
